Student Groups

B.U.S.A.

The Berkeley Undergraduate Sociology Association is an organization for students interested in Sociology. The group primarily consists of undergraduate students, majors and pre-majors in sociology, although the group invites all students to participate in its activities.

In the past, B.U.S.A. has focused its efforts on both educational activities related to the field of Sociology and social get-togethers. The purpose of the group is to provide opportunities for Sociology students to meet with each other and the faculty on an informal basis, and to provide additional learning opportunities related to sociology. Some of the activities in past years have included: Brown Bag Lunches with individual faculty and visiting lecturers, a pizza party, career seminars, an Alumni Night, and a spring reception.

There is usually a core group of students who get involved in the various committees, leadership, and planning of the group's activities. If you are interested, see an Undergraduate Advisor or attend one of the meetings. Feel free to attend the various functions sponsored by B.U.S.A. as they interest you. Announcements regarding meetings and activities are usually made in most of the Sociology classes and via the Sociology Major Email list, or you may get information from the Sociology Undergraduate Advisors.

B.S.S.S.W.

The Black Students in Sociology and Social Welfare group was initiated in the Fall of 1989 by sociology students who wanted to analyze and address problems in the African American community from a sociological perspective. The association's primary focus is to provide a network system for African American students majoring in Sociology or Social Welfare, who are interested in exploring avenues for the economic and social upliftment of the African American community. In recent years, this group has been inactive and we are hoping that in the future some students will decide to get involved and bring this group back to life. Please see an Undergraduate Advisor if you are interested.

L.S.A.

The Latino Sociology Association became active during the Spring of 2008 semester after a few years of inactivity. Formerly known as the Chicano/Latino Associated Sociology Students (C.L.A.S.S.), the purpose of the Latino Sociology Association is to provide support to, although not limited to, students of Chicano/a and Latino/a origin within the sociology major. We hope to provide a sense of community and instill a strong dedication to the pursuit of sociological advancement. All students are welcome!

LSA's main goals are to strengthen the undergraduate experience through such fun activities as study groups, socials, and informational workshops and to encourage the advancement of sociology by bridging the gap between undergraduate life and professional sociology life. Lectures and panels (both formal and informal) between faculty/graduate students and LSA members is one example of activties planned throughout the semesters.

You are welcome to the monthly meetings, which occur the first Tuesday of every month at 7pm. More information about the organization, including the location of meetings and events can be found on Facebook and the sociology department's advising area. LSA's Facebook fan page has updated information on internships, scholarships and other opportunities. See a sociology advisor for more details and/or to be added to the LSA listserve.

The Latino Sociology Association's faculty advisors are Professor Laura Enriquez and Professor Alex Saragoza.
