1998 Sociology Alumni Career Survey Occupations List

The following list is adapted from the list of occupations developed by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics and used in their Occupational Outlook Handbook. We slightly modified this list with added categories (in italics) to more accurately reflect the occupations reported by our survey respondents. This list is intended to give sociology students an idea of what occupations were pursued by our sociology graduates surveyed in 1998.

The numbers in parentheses after each occupation represent all of the coded positions from our survey responses that we counted in each area, including respondents who may have held more than one position in the same occupational area. Subcategories of each larger occupational category were totaled and listed in parentheses (i.e. Executive, Administrative, and Managerial Occupations had 450 total occupations counted among it’s subcategories). In the first five general occupational categories we listed most of the occupations on the OOH list to give students an idea of most of the occupations in those areas, even if our survey respondents did not report them. For the remaining occupational categories we only listed those occupations that were reported in our survey.

For additional information regarding any of the occupations listed here, consult the Occupational Outlook Handbook on the web (http://stats.bls.gov/ocohome.htm) or in most public libraries.
