Closer economic and political integration
of the Americas has resulted in a surge of interest in Latin America.
Sociologists have played a key role among the generation of Latin
Americanist scholars currently reaching maturity, making the formation
of future cohorts of Latin Americanist sociologists a crucial part
of the overall replenishment of the field. The central goal of the
Mellon Program in Latin American Sociology is to ensure that the intellectual
leaders of the next generation of sociologists include a sufficient
number of Latin American specialists and conversely that the next
generation of Latin Americanists contains a sufficient number of
sociologists. California’s growing economic and cultural ties with Latin
America and the University of California at Berkeley’s historic
commitment to Latin American Studies makes Berkeley an ideal site for
building a new stock of Latin Americanist Sociologists. The principal
means of achieving the Program’s is providing support for a highly
selected group of "Mellon Fellows in Latin American Sociology."
