University of California, Berkeley
Andrew W. Mellon Foundation

Research Assistant and Summer Research Fellowship

2006 Application procedures
Application Deadline: February 17 th

Once again this year, funding from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation will allow the Sociology Department at the University of California, Berkeley, to offer a small number of graduate students in their first two years of the Sociology Ph.D. program the opportunity to work as a Research Assistant and to receive a Summer Research Fellowship.  That is, even though only advanced graduate students are eligible for the regular Mellon Fellowship, students who are initiating their graduate work and interested in pursuing work on Latin America are eligible to apply for two kinds of assistance.

The first of these is a Research Assistantship: These one-quarter time research assistantships are designed to link new sociology graduate students with research projects being conducted by faculty affiliated with the Center for Latin American Studies (CLAS), primarily non-sociologists.  The experience will give sociology students interested in Latin America interdisciplinary research apprenticeships that will further broaden their Latin American Studies expertise.  It will also build ties between CLAS faculty and sociology graduate students that have the potential to benefit students later on in their training.  Students are only eligible to receive one such fellowship during their graduate studies.  Interested students should contact either the Director, or the Associate Director, of The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation  Fellowship in Latin American Sociology, Professors Peter Evans and Laura Enriquez, respectively, for assistance in setting up their Research Assistantship.

The second form of support is the Summer Research Fellowship: These will be awarded competitively and will provide a special opportunity to further develop students' knowledge of Latin America and to explore research possibilities than may feed into potential dissertation research.  The amount of the Fellowship stipend is $3,250, with an additional $1,750 for travel expenses.  Application Procedure:   Candidates for the Summer Research Fellowships should submit: 1) a copy of their graduate transcripts; and 2) a brief (2-3 pp.) summary of their proposed plan of research for the summer during which they would like to receive funding.  All materials should be delivered to the Sociology Department Graduate Assistant (Elsa Tranter) in rm. 422 by Friday, February 17th .

If you have any questions : Contact Peter Evans (642-5877/pevans@berkeley.edu); Laura Enriquez (642-2502/enriquez@berkeley.edu); or Elsa Tranter (642-1657/etranter@uclink4)
