GOLF WAR: A STORY OF LAND, WAR AND REVOLUTION IN THE PHILLIPINES
Public sociology has to think deeply how to communicate sociology to wider
audiences. Film is a much talked about medium. We are most fortunate to
have in our midst, yes in our midst,a real live film-maker. Jennifer
Schradie has made many films in the Southern US, focusing on movements for
civil rights, on environmental contamination, on the plight of janitors at
UNC, Chapel Hill, and on poultry workers struggling for racial justice. Her
latest film, The Golf War: A Story of Land, Golf and Revolution in the
Philippines, concerns the intimate ties between golf and land expropriation
in the Philippines. It has been screened all over the world -- a superb and
sobering commentary not only on the devastation wrought by globalization on
the Global South, but also on determined resistance to such devastation.
Jen Schradie will present and discuss her 40-minute film at the first
public sociology forum of the year.
