John Levi Martin received a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of California, Berkeley where he is now a professor and was recently Associate Chair of Sociology at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. His work concentrates on the formal properties of belief systems and social structures; other recent publications deal with field theory, the rationalization of infantry war, the use of race as a conceptual category in American sociology, and the gendering of power dynamics. His current projects include the development of local social structures and pseudo-spatial models for response data.
