Sociology Commencement 2018

The 2018 Sociology Commencement will be held on Monday , May 14, 2018, at 8:45 a.m. in Zellerbach Auditorium. The ceremony will last about 2 hours and will be followed by a reception on the Mezzanine level above the lobby, where light refreshments will be served. Due to seating capacity restrictions, guest admission to the ceremony and reception is by invitation only, and all guests will need a ticket to enter Zellerbach. Summer 2017, Fall 2017, Spring 2018, Summer 2018 & Fall 2018 graduates are welcome to participate.

Keynote speaker: Dr. Mary Kelsey

Mary Kelsey received the UC Berkeley Distinguished Teaching Award, the university’s highest acknowledgement of teaching excellence, in April 2018.

 

Kelsey has been a lecturer at UC Berkeley since January 2000, but has a long history of teaching at diverse institutions including Head Start, Berkeley Adult School, Diablo Valley Community College, CSU-San Bernardino, and UC Davis.  Kelsey is a former fellow of the Mellon Faculty Institute on Undergraduate Research.  She received the Chancellor’s award as an “Everyday Hero” in 2005.  Kelsey has taught sociology classes in 12 different subject areas.

 

Kelsey’s research focuses on issues of poverty and public poverty.  Her dissertation “Negotiating Poverty:  Welfare Regimes and Social Control” explored the public policies available to political refugees from Southeast Asia and how these policies intersected with family structure to either facilitate or impede social mobility.  She has spent the last twelve years following the lives of five lower-income children in Oakland, CA. She has a Bachelor of Arts degree in history from the University of Wisconsin. Her Masters of Arts degree in Asian Studies and doctorate in Sociology were both earned from UC, Berkeley.
