I am from Los Angeles, and when I arrived at UC Berkeley as an undergraduate in 1998, the campus felt as though it was a world apart; not merely 400 miles from home, but an entirely different universe. The people looked different, the accents were different and the cultural touchstones I had grown up with were hard to find. Amid this disorientation, I could still find fellow Chicano students gathered in front of the one building that seemed to acknowledge our existence, the Cesar Chavez Student Center. Read more...
