Annelle Maranan Garcia is a graduate student in the Department of Sociology.

Their research investigates the relationships between race, colonial governance, and public education during the American colonization of the Philippines, with particular attention to Filipino teachers employed under colonial rule. They also write about Filipina/x/o American diasporic activism and care work in migrant justice movements, drawing on their involvement in GABRIELA, an alliance of progressive womxn’s grassroots organizations.

Annelle’s work has been published in Alon: Journal for Filipinx American and Diasporic Studies and Sociological Inquiry.

They are proud to be a non-traditional and transfer student from the California Community College system (Mission College, West Valley College). Annelle holds a BA in Sociology from the University of California, Davis and MA in Asian American Studies from San Francisco State University.
