"From Degrees to Dimensions: Accounts of Workers’ Socioeconomic Dependence on Platforms"

This article explores the dimensions of economic dependence experienced by platform workers, specifically focusing on individuals working on the microwork platform Prolific. Through interviews with 47 workers, three key dimensions of dependence—“episodic,” “discretionary,” and “projected”—are identified, highlighting how these forms of reliance contribute to economic precarity and suggesting the need for broader connections between platform studies and household finance literature.
