Skyler Wang
An economic and digital sociologist by training, Skyler uses interviews, international fieldwork, and digital ethnographies to investigate whether socio-technical & AI systems designed to improve our day-to-day lives meet their moral and social commitments. More specifically, his dissertation explores how monetary and gifting structures in the sharing economy shape ethical and social exchange between users. As an AI Researcher at Meta AI, Skyler's research seeks to alleviate language accessibility issues by designing socially and ethically grounded multimodal translation systems for those communicating with underserved languages. Skyler's research has been featured in journals such as Sociological Perspectives, PLoS ONE, Sex Roles and media outlets such as TIME, CNN, NPR (Morning Edition, All Things Considered), WIRED, Reuters, The Verge, Vox, San Francisco Chronicle, Quartz, GQ, Mashable, HuffPost, and USA Today.
In Fall 2024, Skyler will join McGill University's Department of Sociology as an Assistant Professor.
