Jason Ferguson, Berkeley Sociology PhD (2020), will join the Berkeley Law faculty after serving four years on the faculty at UCLA. Professor Ferguson will be spending the 2024-25 academic year at the Harvard Society of Fellows. We look forward to welcoming him back to Cal in Fall 2025!
Gayl Ness (Berkeley PhD 1961) was a Sociologist of Southeast Asia who spent his entire career at the University of Michigan. His obituary can be found here.

Assistant Professor Areej Sabbagh-Khoury won the award for the Best Publication by an International Scholar for her paper, "Citizenship as Accumulation by Dispossession: The Paradox of Settler Colonial Citizenship" (Sociological Theory, 2022).
PhD student Tyler Leeds won the student paper award from the Biosociology and Evolutionary Sociology section for his paper titled, "The Bio-Habitus: Using Pain Science to Reconstruct Bourdieusian Theory," which was published in Sociological Theory earlier this year.
